Fashion Consumption: Understanding Fashion Consumption in the Fashion Industry
Book chapter, Routledge, 2024 · Read the chapter
This chapter looks at why millennials are increasingly drawn to second-hand luxury shopping. Based on interviews with people who buy pre-loved luxury regularly, I explore what's driving the trend, sustainability, cost, wanting something distinctive, and how it's quietly reshaping what "luxury fashion" means, while opening the door to new circular business models in fashion.
From Revolution to Revenue Stream: How Corporate Targets Co-opt Social Movement Attacks
With A. D. Krabbe. Academy of Management Proceedings, 2024 · Read the paper
This one asks a slightly counter-intuitive question: can companies actually benefit from being attacked by activists? Looking at how commercial academic publishers responded to the Open Access movement, we found that incumbents don't just play defence, they can reframe activist claims to work in their favour, turning a threat into a market opportunity.
Disruptive Technologies and Institutional Processes in the Creative Industries: Evidence from the Fields of Trade Book Publishing, Academic Publishing and Music
Doctoral thesis, City, University of London, 2018 · Read the thesis
My PhD, in a nutshell: what happens to powerful players in an industry when a disruptive technology shows up and threatens their position? Through three case studies, ebooks in trade publishing, open access in academic publishing, and digital disruption in music, I found that incumbents rarely just resist or collapse. More often, they find ways to absorb the disruption and bend it to their advantage.
Fields in Flux: Institutional Bricolage During a Technological Shock
Academy of Management Proceedings, 2016 · Read the paper
This paper traces what happened when the ebook entered UK trade publishing between 2000 and 2016. I found that incumbents held onto control not by blocking the technology outright, but by shaping how it could be used, a much messier, more back-and-forth process than the standard "old industry gets disrupted" story suggests.
